South Tyrol is a region that is influenced by both the German-speaking and Romanic areas and in which three different language groups live together: German, Italian and Ladin.

Castles, mansions and museums

South Tyrol has a lot to offer for culturally interested people: around 800 castles and mansions, including well-known names such as the Tyrol Castle or Sigmundskron Castle, around 90 museums such as the Mining World Ridnaun-Schneeberg, the "Ötzi Museum" in Bolzano/Bozen or the South Tyrolean Folklore Museum in Dietenheim and numerous churches and monasteries, such as the Cathedral in Bressanone/Brixen or the Abbazia di Novacella. Several restored castles and mansions nowadays house impressive hotels, restaurants and museums.

Lively folklore traditions and customs

In South Tyrol ancient handcraft, customs and traditions have not disappeared over the centuries, they have been passed on from generation to generation and are still practiced and cultivated in many places today. For example, woodcarvings are still made in Gröden/Val Gardena, quills embroidery is still performed in the Val Sarentino/Sarntal and the  Sacred Heart fire are lit on South Tyrol's mountains year after year in June.

Whether rural, ecclesiastical or folk rituals and customs - today every guest in South Tyrol has the opportunity to experience and even actively participate in all this. Cheerful city events, music and dance festivals, rustic farmers' markets, gastronomic happenings and much more await you in this strongly traditional influenced region and invite you to a deep insight into South Tyrolean history!

Between tradition and modernity

In addition, events with local and internationally renowned artists are organised throughout the whole year. These events often take place outdoors, for example in the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle in Merano or on Lake of Caldaro/Kaltern.
